This field undertakes the multi-disciplined analysis of the theories and methods of “religious studies,” in both a critical and analytic perspective. It studies the practices, traditions, and phenomena deemed in some important way “religious,” and it also studies the scholarly lenses through which we identify, and seek to understand, why, how, and what about an object of study is appropriately called “religious.” It also studies concepts arguably fundamental to “religion,” such as “secularity,” analyzing their logic and the history of their functioning in the social order.
