Alum Returns to UVA to Explore Japanese Buddhism and Rethink National Narratives

Jessica Starling received her MA in 2006 and her PhD in 2012 from UVA, both in religious studies. Now, she is a professor of religious studies at Lewis & Clark College. Her research has focused on Japanese Buddhism and particularly the Jodo Shinshu tradition common in Japan. In anticipation of her return to UVA this April for the East Asia Center’s 50th Anniversary conference, Starling answered a few questions on her time at UVA, her research, and what she sees for the future of East Asian studies.
